Working for the Love of the Sea

Volunteer Guides - Sea World Education Department Volunteering for the love of the sea.
Aquaria and Zoos around the world are known for their band of loyal Volunteer Guides. Without their tireless energy, the Sea World Education Centre would not be able to function.

Fifty Volunteer Guides serve at Sea World and are drawn from all walks of life. They bring with them a wealth of experience and talent, from arts and crafts to innovative teaching methods. Their willingness and dedication make them a very special group of people.

The rigorous, ongoing training keeps them up to date with the latest in the marine world and their knowledge base is extended through intensive study and reading. Monthly meetings with a guest speaker add to their knowledge base and social outings to places of interest and regular hands-on activities keep their minds alive with what is new and happening in the marine world.

Volunteer Guides work on courses and at various stations in the Aquarium to interact with the public in an informal manner.

During the busy holiday season the Volunteer Guides are invaluable as they assist the Guest Relations Guides to deal with the large numbers of visitors to the Aquarium. Without them to assist with commentaries at the daily feeds, man the big microscope or chat to guests at the ray pool – the staff would be stretched during these busy times.

Holiday activities which incorporate arts and crafts have left many a Mum looking on with envy!

Testimony itself to the loyalty and dedication of the volunteers, is that the longest serving Volunteer has been at Sea World for 28 years – that is service indeed!
