Coral Gardens

A sunken cargo vessel provides the theming for the most colourful area of the aquarium, the Coral Gardens. In this gallery two medium size exhibits house living soft and hard corals, with species from our east coast reefs. These reefs are home to some of the southernmost coral reefs in the world making this exhibit quite unique. Special skylights allow natural light onto the corals to ensure that their symbiotic zooxanthellae can photosynthesise, thereby helping to feed the corals and ensuring their growth. In a separate 200m3 hexagonally-shaped exhibit, over 40 species of coral reef fish are displayed amongst a realistic artificial coral reef. Many of these fish, such as the butterflyfish (Chaetodontidae), feed on coral polyps in their natural environment but are quite content in their artificial coral habitat, pecking for bits of food hidden by the animal enrichment specialists. Echinoderms are always popular exhibit species and the echinoderm exhibit, with its colourful sea stars, cucumbers, urchins and feather stars is a great hit with guests.
