Puffadder
Puffadder
Bitis arietans
One of South Africa's most dangerous snakes. It is quite common and is often encountered by humans. This is because it is an ambush predator which relies on its superb camouflage in order to trap its prey, it does not always move away when a human approaches. It will bite if stepped upon, and most of the bites which are sustained are found on the lower legs of the victims. As an adder, the Puffadder possesses long, hinged fangs and cytotoxic venom, which breaks down the cells of the victim.
