Ring Necked Spitting Cobra
Ring Necked Spitting Cobra (Rinkhals)
Hemachatus haemachatus
The Rinkhals is an amazing "cobra" type snake that is not considered a true cobra, even though it does spread a hood like a cobra and does spray venom. Some of the differences between them is that true cobras are egg laying creatures whilst Rinkhals give birth to live young. The true spitting cobras are able to spray venom up to a distance of approximately three metres, by a process of constricting the venom glands and forcing venom through the adapted fangs. Rinkhals are able to spray only about a metre, and far less effectively than the true spitting cobras.
