Vine Snake

Vine Snake
Thelotornis capensis capensis

The Vine Snake is also known as the Twig Snake or the Bird Snake, and it is unique for a number of reasons. It is the only deadly venomous snake in Southern Africa for which there is no anti-venom. But fear not, even if you are bitten, which is highly unlikely, the bite is treatable. There have only been a very limited number of bites in the last forty years, and not one recorded death. Their vision is aided by a unique shaped pupil, keyhole in shape, allowing them to have the ability to spot animals standing still. They are also the only snake in the world to use their tongue to lure their prey towards them. The tongue is bright in colour and is used to get lizards to come closer so they may be caught and eaten!
