Visit the new Eco House in the aquarium

2012 International Year of Sustainable Energy

This United Nations project aims to create "an enabling environment for the promotion and use of new and renewable energy technologies, including measures to improve access to such technologies."

Access to energy transforms lives by helping people generate income, provide health care services, improve education and protect the environment. Those of us in South Africa that have access to electricity can make a difference to our pockets and the planet by reducing our daily use.

uShaka Sea World will be launching a brand new exhibit in February – an EcoHouse. Come and see how to reduce energy and water.

Water Week - 19 to 24 March 2012 19 to 24 March

Heard of Meatless Mondays? Why?

There are 7 billion people to feed on the planet today and another 2 billion are expected to join by 2050. Statistics say that each of us drinks from 2 to 4 litres of water every day, however most of the water we ‘drink’ is embedded in the food we eat: producing 1 kilo of beef for example consumes 15,000 litres of water while 1 kilo of wheat only ’drinks up’ 1,500 litres.

uShaka Sea World will share information with visitors about eating sustainably.

Earth Hour - 31 March 2012 from 08.30 to 09.30 pm

Join a massive group in Durban and worldwide at 8:30 pm to switch off all the lights for one hour. Hundreds of millions of people transcend race, religion, culture, society, generation and geography, switching off their lights in a visual global celebration of their commitment to saving energy and reducing the effects of Climate Change. 1.3 billion people in cities, towns and municipalities took part in Earth Hour 2011 across more than 130 countries! South Africa saved 350 megawatts in just one hour!

Starting 26 years ago, this annual event happens in over 100 countries world-wide. The uShaka Marine World staff join together with our neighbour, Addington Primary School to clean up the uShaka Beach. The KwaZulu-Natal Clean-up is co-ordinated by KZN Wildlife. If you have a group that wants to participate, contact their Durban office (031) 274 1150.

Through your enthusiastic and dedicated efforts as a volunteer, the International Coastal Clean-up has become one of the largest clean-up programmes on behalf of the marine environment within KwaZulu-Natal.
