So often people learn about the environment whilst looking on from the side lines. We are all part of the "Web of Life"! To highlight marine biodiversity, the threats faced, and how each person can help, Sea World will host activities for a number of special events throughout 2008.

February - International Year of the Frog
This month we highlight the role of frogs in the ecosystem and the enormous threats they face. Half of the known species could go extinct in our life time. They are severely affected by habitat destruction, the exotic pet trade and a parasitic fungus that humans have spread worldwide.February the 29th is "Leap Day" Learn what you can do for your local frogs this month!
22 March - World Water Day
Rivers lead to the sea! Think about the water you use at home and learn about how you affect water that travels to the sea. The sea is only as far as the closest river or drain! This year at Sea World the public are being encouraged to pause before you pour!We all use a number of household products that should not go down the drain. Come and find out more.
22 April - Earth Day
Climate change is currently the key environmental focus. Find out how you can reduce energy needs in your daily life and thereby assist in reducing world carbon emissions.17 May - National Science Week
The NPC Sea World Education Centre runs special events to promote an interest in Marine Science. The focus will be on the promotion of marine careers and the promotion of the sciences as subject choices at school.We are inviting interested parents and learners to a presentation on marine careers using Sea World as an example.
Marine Careers at Sea World 17 May 2008
Sea World is participating in the 4th National Science Week from 10 to 17 May 2008. The theme is "Tomorrow´s Science and Technology are in our Youth´s hands".National Science Week is an annual country-wide event led by the Department of Science and Technology and supported by the South African Agency for Science and Technology advancement. It is aimed at attracting the country´s youth to enter science careers.
Sea World has the advantage of being unique in South Africa as an organisation combining a marine research facility, oceanarium and education centre.
Parents and learners over 13 are invited to a presentation at the NPC Sea World Education Centre at no charge on Saturday 17th May to come and learn about the exciting world of working with the sea and the many career opportunities involved.
We will also be running a teachers workshop on Marine Careers on Wednesday 14th May with Thursday 15th May as a repeat.

This year, the National Science Week will commence on 10 until 17 May 2008 and will have many exciting opportunities for learners, teachers, students, academics, parents and the public at large to get involved in science based activities, including among others: teacher and learner workshops, science competitions and exhibitions, public talks, lectures and seminars, career exhibitions and learner outreach activities as well as tours of the country´s major science facilities.
Key objectives:
- Promote career awareness among youth, parents and educators, especially those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
- Contribute to increased participation and performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
- Help identify talent and potential, and
- Advance science literacy among youth and the general public.

This 2-day course will give participants (aged 14 - 18) an insight into the varied marine careers that there are available. They will get to interact with research scientists, staff that work with dolphins and fish, and many others.11 July - World Population Day

This is an annual event that happens in over 100 countries world-wide. The earmarked day is the 3rd Saturday of September. The uShaka staff join together with our neighbour, Addington Primary School to clean up the uShaka beach. This is different to most litter campaigns in that all the litter is sorted and counted. Forms are completed and sent to the organizers in America. The KwaZulu-Natal Clean-up is co-ordinated by KZN Wildlife so if you have a group that wants to participate, contact their Durban office (031) 2741150 or alternately Belinda Glenn on 031 328 819213 - 19 October - Marine Week
