Rain puts a damper on coastal clean-up efforts

uShaka Marine World staff joined Addington Primary School learners to clean up the local beach

Pouring rain put a damper on the 21st International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday 15 September, with hopes of attracting hundreds of volunteers fading as the morning wore on.

The clean-up included sorting and recording all the litter collected

Since its inception, this global anti-litter initiative has been held on the third Saturday in September, which is generally a good time to be on the beach bright and early. However, 2012 was uncharacteristically wet on the day and only a few staunch supporters made it onto the beach armed with rain jackets, plastic bags and gumboots to collect debris in front of uShaka Marine World.

Nearly 50 learners from Grades 5 to 7 at Addington Primary School joined forces with uShaka Marine World, but elected to remain in the warm, dry classroom sorting and counting the refuse brought in by the intrepid clean-up crew.

The clean-up fulfils three main objectives: To remove debris from the beaches, to collect information about the debris and to promote water pollution prevention efforts.

One of the learners counted 243 cigarette butts, 11 glass bottles, 28 plastic drink bottles, 46 lids, 47 food wrappers and 29 straws from the gathered debris.
