Ugu Lwethu – Our Coast

The Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) has developed a first-of-its-kind resource covering the KwaZulu-Natal coast in the form of a book called Ugu Lwethu – Our Coast.

The book was developed in association with the then-KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DAEA), now known as the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DETEA). It is aimed at authorities tasked with the day-to-day management of our coast, but will be of value to anyone interested in or active along the KZN coast.

It provides background information on the coastal environment and its value with the aim of informing and improving decision-making. It provides an overview of the natural coastal environment, key coastal ecosystems and species, coastal resources and their immense social and economic value, highlighting the diverse uses of these. The book also discusses the pressures and threats faced along the KZN coast and the management of the coast, highlighting legislative requirements and best practice.
